Members of the wider Auckland community came together to meet with the Honourable Georgina Te Heuheu as the new Minister of Pacific Island Affairs also signifying the first time for a Maori minister to lead this ministry.
Given a formal welcome and meeting attended by representatives from various Pacific Island communities in Auckland, the minister was escorted in by our very own Fiji warriors: Tukana & Fotu (Jnr) Waqabaca.
Dressed in traditional Fijian attire, our two warriors represented our community graciously standing their ground until the entire ceremony was complete.
Welcoming the attendees Fa’amatuainu Tino Pereira (MC) thanked the various groups represented in attendance before Rev. Fieta Ikitoelagi-Faitala opened the evening in prayer. Mr Pereira acknowledged the significance of this new relationship as a first in the Ministry creating a link with Pacific people of New Zealand and Tangata Whenua.
Community spokespeople from the main Pacific groups in Auckland including our Fiji rep Sireli Kini were all given a few minutes to welcome the minister in their native tongues.
Also accompanying the new minister Peseta Sam Lotu I’iga (MP for Maugakiekie) also spoke briefly addressing all goups represented at the meeting declaring a commitment to serve and determination to begin from grass-root level.
Chief Executive of the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs Dr Collin Tukuitonga then introduced the Honourable Georgina Te Heuheu with a brief outline on her background highlighting that she was the first Maori woman to attain a law degree.
The Minister then addressed the meeting beginning in her native tongue making reference to her tribal beginnings from the centre of the North Island. Acknowledging her Maori descent the Hon. Georgina Te Heuheu drew similarities with the Pacific culture treasure of family.
With her parties commitment to grow stronger families and communities, the minister drew on two main priorities for the ministry: education and skilling for all Pacific people.
The meeting was then closed in prayer and followed by dinner giving individuals the opportunity to meet the new minister.
