Vula
The Conch’s production of Vula is a stunning original work of Pacific Island visual theatre. Vula explores the practical, sensual and spiritual relationship between Pacific Island women and the sea. Performed by a vibrant company on a stage flooded in water, and combining magic and illusion with traditional song and dance, Vula is a feast for the soul.
Bounded by coral walls, the lagoon is the place of women. Within it they fish, bathe and on its shores they dance. In this searingly beautiful work, tropical rain falls, fish swim and hibiscus flowers float in mid-air.
Directed by Nina Nawalowalo with an award-winning score by Gareth Farr and lighting by Stephen Blackburn (Lighting Designer of the Year). Starring Fiona Collins, Susana Lei’ataua, Tausili Mose and Kasaya Manulevu.

Nina Nawalowalo
“In 1994 I traveled to Fiji with my father, Ratu Noa Nawalowalo. One of my many enduring memories is standing in the waves listening to the beautiful sound of women singing in harmony as they waded out to the reef to fish. They were at a distance from one another calling out clearly the tune of a hymn. The sounds of their voices mixed with the sound of water.

Here in the water was a place where so many dimensions of these women were expressed. The female powers of strength, sensuality and spirit were simultaneously those of the water itself. In its movement I saw the undulations of women dancing.

I knew that one day I would make a piece of work about this.”

- Nina Nawalowalo, Director.
