| Melissa Lelo & her role |
 |
Bula na yacaqu o Melissa Lelo. I am one of two elected reps for Fiji on the Pacific Island Board Auckland City (PIBAC). The other rep is Jone Buliruarua. Our role is to be the voice of the Fijian community and a link to Auckland City Council. This is our opportunity to ensure our voice is heard at a decision making level within council. The first year of the board’s operation focussed on establishing the board’s role, functions and processes within the context of its purpose and vision. “To create opportunities for a sustainable Pacific City to enhance the well being and cultural heritage of Pacific peoples in Auckland City.” Our role is also to encourage you to participate in the democratic process at local government level – to both vote and stand as candidates for council and community boards. This was achieved with many Pacific people standing in the last local elections than ever before. PIBAC has contributed and advocated for Pacific Island perspectives on Auckland City Council’s annual and strategic planning processes and documents such as the Long Term City Council Plan and to promote and advocate to council and other stakeholders on issues that affect Pacific Island people in Auckland City. This was achieved through community fono’s and information sessions. The role of PIBAC is intended to support the economic and cultural well being of Pacific communities in Auckland City. We do this through advocacy and liaising on local & regional projects to ensure that Pacific Island perspectives are incorporated. Another key objective of the board is to develop and strengthen ‘ethnic-specific village’ communities as the foundation of the board & the council’s community consultation, communication and accountability. Being a part of the community working group which led to the development of PIBAC I am confident that we can contribute towards the further development and implementation of the councils Pacific Peoples participation policy and the boards objectives. Between us we have wide Pacific networks and support from key groups in the Fijian community. We are committed to making Auckland City Council accountable to Pacific people particularly those that we represent in the Fiji community. We would like to encourage those who want to contribute to making Auckland city a better place to take the opportunity to be heard through our ethnic reps. Melissa Lelo (09) 369 7182 or melissa.lelo@procare.co.nz Jone Buliruarua: (09) 574 5855
